Process
When I make work, ideas are directed towards uncovering some forgotten piece of humanity or magnifying the bits of our psyche that are ignored, misunderstood, and maybe even vulgar. Because I was a nerdy, shy, and creative child (one who spent a lot of her time teaching the neighborhood children elaborate self-concocted musicals) my work has always wrestled with the search for self and displays of human psychology. I am interested in a place where dance, theatricality, and American culture overlap. I utilize task-based improvisations, character-driven gesture, and dynamic physical states, creating movement vocabularies that relate specifically to the overall theme (or narrative) of a work. In addition to choreographing bodies, I choreograph other elements inside of my dances. This means designing and building set pieces, manipulating music and noise into sound scores, incorporating dialogue and written text, editing video into projected designs, and learning specific technical skills as needed. I am invested in the details of all the layers of a performance. (For more information about specific works please view Dance Descriptions)press_kit.htmlshapeimage_3_link_0
